Newsletter No.55

Welcome to the last issue of our Newsletter for 2007. The last quarter has been a busy one because of the Federation of South-east Asian Alumni Societies (FOSAAS) 6th Convention hosted in Ho Chih Minh City from 21st-24th November, and our Annual Dinner (AOTS Nite 2007) on 30th November.

During the FOSAAS Convention, Malaysia proposed the setting up of a joint Japan (AOTS)-Malaysia training centre on Advanced Information and Communication Technology in Johor (as part of the Johor Cyber Port complex). Our Annual Dinner was a success, and we thank all the sponsors, guests and members for their kind contributions and presence.

Some of your Executive Members together with Kodaira-san paid a courtesy call to our Patron Y.B. Dato’ Seri Rafidah Aziz on 29th August 2007. Y.B. Dato’ Seri was very gracious to provide advice on how we should further enhance our activities and standing. She suggested that PAAM should publish a booklet with comprehensive data and information to highlight the training activities and achievements over the years. This would increase public awareness of the tremendous amount of effort that has been expended in the area of human resource development by AOTS in cooperation with PAAM. Y.B. Dato’ Seri mentioned that human capital development is critical to Malaysia’s economic development.

I wish all of you success in your undertakings, and good health to you and your family.

A. AZIZ Y. KAMARUDDIN

SEMINAR ON KAIZEN “TOWARDS BETTERMENT: 5S & KAIZEN”

University Technology Malaysia (UTM), Jalan Semarak on 22nd August 2007 By: Angela

It has been 50 years since Malaysia and Japan commenced diplomatic relations. While Malaysia celebrates its 50th golden year of independence, the Persatuan Alumni AOTS Malaysia (PAAM) was busy with our very own event i.e. the “5S and Kaizen Seminar” which was held on 22nd August 2007 in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) City Campus, Kuala Lumpur at its Business & Advanced Technology Centre (BATC).This half day seminar is the 6th in the series and is always held to coincide with the Japan Festival in Malaysia.

A total of seventy seven (77) participants attended this seminar. Considering that it was held during their mid-term break, the response was most tremendous. Most of the audience were made up of working professionals and/or post-graduate students. Professor Dr. Awaluddin Bin Mohamed Shaharoun (Deputy Executive Director, BATC/UTM) delivered an inspiring welcome speech, followed by Mr. Yang Chor Leong, our representative and Dr. Kaori Shinozaki who spoke on behalf of the Embassy of Japan.

The enthusiastic speakers for this event, Mr. Lim Eng Swee and Mr. Theodore K.C Wong, our very own PAAM members, took the floor with their respective seminar papers and provided plenty of examples and case studies. These illustrations were real-life situations which occurred in their organizations or observed through years of experience in the manufacturing industry and working environment. Both speakers also shared the key factors for successful implementation of Kaizen and its elements. At the end of the seminar session, the participants were given the opportunity to enhance the seminar with Questions & Answers session.

On behalf of PAAM, we wish to express our appreciation to the speakers, BATC/UTM and the Embassy of Japan for the continuous support extended to PAAM in making this event a great success.

A Short Journal from Tokyo, Japan By Ms. Y.C Tay

Tokyo is one of the most fast paced cities I have ever been to. I enjoyed my recent trip to Tokyo very much. The trip was well organized by PAAM, in collaboration with the Hippo Club, Japan. We were warmly greeted by the homestay hosts and HIPPO representative upon arrival at Tokyo airport.

My host family was very hospitable and I was treated like one of their very own. The food was fantastic. I had the chance to try many different types of Japanese food. The highlight of my trip was to Tokyo Disneyland and Mount Fuji. Through this program, I have made many friends i.e. Japanese, Koreans, people from Hong Kong and many other nationalities. Japan, someday I will visit you again!

On 13th November 2007, Persatuan Alumni AOTS Malaysia successfully organized a Training Program on Inventory Management at Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The training program was conducted by Mr. Alan Lai, an active PAAM member with broad experience on this topic. 23 participants attended the program. This program was very hands-on with lots of practical exercises to enhance the participant’s understanding of the subject.

PAAM picnic at Hutan Lipur Sg. Congkak, Hulu Langat, Selangor on 8th July 200

The Sunday morning of July 8th 2007 saw 27 excited and energized PAAM participants, gathering at the main entrance of Hutan Lipur Sg. Congkak for a half day outing.

The group started off with a 30-minute Qi Gong session conducted by central committee member, Master Lim Eng Swee. Refreshed, a telematch with balloon throwing event made everyone work hard for a prize. It was indeed a relaxing time to stroll along the river bank, taking in the breath-taking flora & fauna of Sg. Congkak. Whilst the more daring ones took a dive into the river for a swim, others went around snapping photographs for remembrance.

Come noontime everyone gathered again for the most delicious lunch, some durians and tidbits. Exhausted but happy to have made the trip back to nature, we all made our way back to the concrete jungle that we came from.
