Sumimasen (Pardon Me)
By: Mr. Tan Teng Ek
There is a word which is very often used by the Japanese people in their daily conversation. SUMIMASEN in Japanese is equivalent to “I am sorry” or “Excuse me” in the English language. The Japanese use this word when they want to apologize. They use this word SUMIMASEN, perhaps even more so than in the English language.

When someone wants you to pass something to him, maybe a plate, he will say SUMIMASEN. After receiving the plate from you, he may even say SUMIMASEN again. When someone accidentally steps on the foot, he will apologize by saying SUMIMASEN.

When they stop you on the road and ask you for directions, the Japanese will fisrt say SUMIMASEN. Sometimes the Japanese will add DOMO to SUMIMASEN, when apologizing or thanking you for the favor you haven given to them.

When the Japanese say CHOTTO SUMIMASEN, normally it means than they are going to ask someone to do something. The next time you meet a Japanese, just say CHOTTO SUMIMASEN and he will be all ears to you.
